Varilla Named AEC Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Lancaster, Pa. – (3/14/2022) – Gwynedd Mercy University provided its second Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week with the league’s selection of sophomore attack Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.). The Griffins’ leading scorer to date (35 points; 28 goals, 7 assists), Varillia offered career and season-highs in points (11), goals (7), and assists (4) in Gwynedd Mercy University’s 25-14 victory over Saint Mary’s College (IN). She also recorded four ground balls and a caused turnover in the win.
Gwynedd Mercy University (5-2) concluded their stay at Sewanee, the University of the South with Wednesday's (Mar. 9) 25-14 (3:56) victory over Saint Mary's College (IN) (2-3). After a 6-6 first quarter, the Griffins used a five-goal run to separate from the Belles; senior attack Meleah Hoats (Conyngham, Pa.) deposited the first goal (7-6, 11:34) of the run with follow-up scores coming from Varilla (9:23, 8:57), junior midfielder Damali Teagle (Philadelphia, Pa.) (10-6, 8:38), and senior attack Anna Grace Bernicker (Merion Station, Pa.) (11-6, 5:38). With each side scoring once more before intermission the spread remained at five goals for halftime; 12-7 (0:33). After the break, Saint Mary's College trimmed the deficit to just three goals, 12-9 (14:24), with the first two tallies of the third quarter. Fortunately, they were answered by another five-goal Griffin run that reestablished Gwynedd Mercy University's cushion at nine goals, 18-9 (8:52), midway through the frame. From there, a 7-5 Griffin favor precipitated the eventual 11-point victory.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to The GMercyU Athletic Complex this Wednesday, March 16, when they host Rutgers University - Camden in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
