Summers Secures AEC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

Lancaster, Pa. – (1/27/2025) – Gwynedd Mercy University graduate guard Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J.) averaged 25.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in a 2-1 week that included wins over Mount Aloysius College (W, 86-48 on Jan. 20) and league rival Centenary University (N.J.) (W, 86-80 on Jan. 22). Summers’ efforts included a career-high 29 points, two rebounds, an assist, and four steals in the victory over the Cyclones and earn him a spot on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll.

Marymount University junior guard Isaac Harris (Cherryville, Pa.) was named the AEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Neumann University junior forward Donte Dupriest (Philadelphia, Pa.) was recognized as the AEC Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week. Summers was joined on the AEC Weekly Honor Roll by Centenary University (N.J.) sophomore guard Kenneth Rankin (Ewing, N.J.), Neumann University senior guard T.J. Lewis (Parkesburg, Pa.), Marywood University senior guard Brendan Franko (Wantagh, N.J.), Pratt Institute freshman guard Thomas Graetz (Sydney, Australia), as well as Immaculata University senior guards John Proctor (Coatesville, Pa.) and John Flood (Philadelphia, Pa.).

Gwynedd Mercy University (15-3, 3-2) put a stop to their recent two-game skid with Monday evening's decisive 86-48 victory over Mount Aloysius College (5-11). The Griffin defense turned the Mounties over 13 times in the first half, allowing them to grab an early 12-2 (15:34) advantage and hold on for a 39-27 (0:34) halftime lead. After intermission, the outcome was never in question as the Red and Gold ensured victory with a 52.9% (18-of-34) shooting performance from the field that included eight threes (8-of-17, .471) and was supported with a perfect 3-of-3 (1.000) showing at the free throw line. Summers led four Griffins in double figures with 18 points; he also grabbed seven rebounds, while making two assists and a steal.

Gwynedd Mercy University snared their third AEC victory of the season with Wednesday night's 86-80 triumph over Centenary University (N.J.) (8-10, 2-3). Behind a career-best 29-point performance from Summers, the Griffins came back from an early 15-6 (15:11) deficit to lead the Cyclones by as many as 12 points, 30-18 (8:10) with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Unfortunately, the Red and Gold would need to reassert themselves in the second half as a 42-40 (0:01) halftime lead was extended to a 77-67 (1:46) perch to withstand Centenary University's final push. Summers was 11-of-16 (.688) from the field and 6-of-8 (.750) from the free throw line. He also recorded two rebounds, an assist, and four steals.

Gwynedd Mercy University trailed Neumann University (14-5, 5-1) for the duration of Saturday evening's AEC affair as the Griffins suffered their second league loss by falling behind by as many as 21 points, 33-12 (8:10), and rallying for a 45-31 halftime spread, before an 85-69 Knight final. Summers led the Red and Gold with 28 points; he was 9-of-11 (.818) from the floor including five threes (5-of-7, .714), and he hit 5-of-6 (.833) from the free throw line while grabbing three rebounds and making an assist.

Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Tuesday, January 28, when they visit league newcomer, Pratt Institute for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
