Sayed Scores AEC Men's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

Lancaster, Pa. – (12/8/2025) – Gwynedd Mercy University junior guard Mazen Sayed (Chichester, Pa.) kept Gwynedd Mercy University in their recent 88-84 overtime loss to Alvernia University (Dec. 3) with a career-high 27 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. The breakout performance earned Sayed his first career appearance on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll.

Sayed was joined on the AEC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll by Centenary University (N.J.) junior guard Kenneth Rankin (Ewing, N.J.) and junior forward Jasir Lane (Hoboken, N.J.), Marymount University junior guard Reuben McEachern (Richmond, Va.), Pratt Institute senior forward Cameron Hatcher (Cincinnati, Ohio), as well as Saint Elizabeth University senior guard Josiah King (Irvington, N.J.) and senior forward Cam’Ron Martel (Houston, Texas). The AEC Player of the Week title went to Neumann University senior guard D.J. Earl, while the AEC Defensive Player of the Week went to his teammate, senior forward Dante Dupreist (Philadelphia, Pa.).

Gwynedd Mercy University (5-2) could not find a basket off the opening tip, but worked Alvernia University (4-3) down to a 31-22 (0:32) halftime deficit. It was Sayed who sparked the Red and Gold and he continued to lead them through a second half that saw the Griffins tie the game on a jumper by sophomore guard Bruce Smith (Philadelphia, Pa.) just past the seven-minute mark, 57-57 (6:50), and grab a three-point lead on a much-needed three-point basket from graduate guard Dylan Harris (Bloomsburg, Pa.); 69-66 (3:33). Unfortunately, the Golden Wolves forced an overtime frame where an 81-76 (2:38) Griffin perch was not enough; for the visitors used a couple clutch three-point baskets (1:54, 0:38) to slingshot for an eventual 88-84 (0:06) win.

Sayed was efficient in his breakout performance, hitting 9-of-10 (.900 FG%) from the floor - including a couple three-pointers (2-of-3, .667 3PT%) - and 7-of-8 (.875 FT%) from the free throw line. The 27-point effort is the first 20-plus game of his collegiate career and only the eighth in double-digit scoring. His seven rebounds also matched a career-high.

Gwynedd Mercy University plays their last home game of 2025 tonight, Monday, December 8, as they host Penn State Abington for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
