Eagan Earns AEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Title, Balcer Lands on Honor Roll

Lancaster, Pa. – (11/11/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University senior forward Alexis Eagan (Drexel Hill, Pa.) recorded a pair of double-doubles in the Griffins’ 1-1 showing in the 2024 GMercyU Tip-Off Tournament to earn the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award. She was joined on the league’s first report of the season, by sophomore guard Angelina Balcer (Philadelphia, Pa.) who earned Honor Roll recognition with 22 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists, and seven steals between the Red and Golds’ results versus Muhlenberg College (W, 69-60 on Nov. 8) and DeSales University (L, 66-70 on Nov. 9).

Marywood University senior guard Olicia Ciullo (Old Forge, Pa.) was named the AEC Defensive Player of the Week. Balcer was joined on the Weekly Honor Roll by Centenary University (N.J.) senior guard Kaylie Elsbree (Howell, N.J.) and junior guard Jasmine Sampong (Riverdale, N.J.), as well as Immaculata University senior guards Reese Mullins (Hockessin, Del.) and Tessa Liberatoscioli (Malvern, Pa.).

The Griffins (1-1) hosted their annual Gwynedd Mercy University Tip-Off Tournament to open the 2024-25 season. On Friday night, the Red and Gold started the season on a high note with a 69-60 victory over Muhlenberg College (0-1). Eagan was a driving factor in the Red and Gold's victory with 13 points and a game-high ten rebounds. She scored all three of her baskets (3-of-10, .300 FG%) from long range (3-of-8, .375 3PT%) while also making two assists and three steals in the contest. Balcer was a great compliment, as the sophomore floor general fueled the offense and captained the defense with career-highs in assists (7) and steals (5). She also finished the affair with 12 points and eight rebounds.

In Saturday’s matinee, a back-and-forth affair with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III powerhouse DeSales University (2-0) went down to the wire. Eagan quietly marked her second straight double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. She was  7-of-11 (.636) from the field and 4-of-5 (.800) at the free throw line while also contributing three assists and four steals to the Griffin effort. Balcer was a factor in the fray as well with 10 points, four rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Gwynedd Mercy University is back on action Wednesday, November 13, when they host Arcadia University in a 6:00 p.m. Battle of 309.
