Morris Milestone Continues Stay, Purnell Joins on AEC Women’s Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll
Lancaster, Pa. – (10/10/2022) – Senior libero Ashley Morris (Quakertown, Pa.) made her third appearance – and second straight - on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll (10/10, 10/3, 9/19). She was joined this time by junior outside hitter Bria Purnell (Reading, Pa.), who powered Gwynedd Mercy University (7-11, 2-1) for a 2-0 week versus Rutgers University – Newark (W, 3-1; 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20 on Oct. 6) and league rival Immaculata University (W, 3-1; 26-24, 23-25, 29-27, 25-13) with 38.5 points (32 kills, 5 aces, block solo, block assist) 30 digs and a pair of assists. Morris totaled four assists, four aces, and 38 digs in the process of surpassing the 1,000-dig plateau.
Purnell was one of three Griffins to record at least ten kills in a 3-1 victory over Rutgers – Newark (0-12). She and junior middle hitter Ashley Brown (Lansdale, Pa.) both finished 15 kills, but Purnell finished with a team-high 18.5 points with three aces and a block assist versus the Scarlet Raiders. The following night, she out did herself. This time she scored 17 kills on a .268 (17K-6E-41TA) hitting percentage while offering two assists, a pair of aces, 18 digs, and a solo block in a 3-1 win over the Mighty Macs.
Morris became the fourth Griffin in program history to reach 1,000 career digs with her first dig of the second set versus the Scarlet Raiders. Gwynedd Mercy University celebrated her milestone with a 3-1 victory and Morris accompanied it with four assists, two aces, and 15 more digs. Against the Mighty Macs, Morris followed up her historical performance with a pair of aces and 22 digs. She currently has a total of 1,207 career digs, including her 175 digs as a freshman (2018) at Penn State Berks.
Gwynedd Mercy University play next on Wednesday, October 12, when they visit Widener University for a 7:00 p.m. match.
