Seven Points versus Lions Returns Thornton To AEC Weekly Honor Roll Mention
Lancaster, Pa. – (9/26/2022) – Gwynedd Mercy University graduate forward Caitlyn Thornton (Ivyland, Pa.) racked up seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) in the Griffins’ 12-0 triumph over Bryn Athyn College (Sept. 24) earning her a return to the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Field Hockey Weekly Honor Roll. Thornton also recorded one of Gwynedd Mercy University’s two shots in a 2-0 loss to the University of Scranton (Sept. 21) earlier in the week. This is her second AEC Weekly Honor Roll appearance as she garnered recognition after providing a pair of assists in the Griffins’ dramatic 2-1 victory at Cedar Crest College (Sept. 3).
Gwynedd Mercy University (3-4) goals came early and often versus Bryn Athyn College (0-5) as hat tricks from Thornton (4:37, 8:15, 35:44) and freshman forward Makenzie Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.) accounted for half of the Griffins' scores in a 12-0 shutout of the Lions. Gwynedd Mercy University outshot Bryn Athyn College by a 27-0 margin and held a 13-0 advantage in penalty corners. Thornton totaled four shots and a team-high seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) as she added an assist on a first-quarter score from sophomore forward Amber Sims (Perkasie, Pa.) (3-0, 7:24).
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Wednesday, September 28, when they visit Arcadia University for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
