Bramsway and Price Pull AEC Baseball Weekly Roll Recognition
Lancaster, Pa. – (5/2/2022) – Sophomore pitcher Mitchell Bramsway (Temecula, Calif.) collected the win in a 4-3 walk-off in the first game versus Cabrini University on Saturday, April 30, and junior first baseman Nick Price (Levittown, Pa.) was 4-for-10 for the week including a grand slam in a 7-6 game-two loss to the Cavaliers. The Gwynedd Mercy University duo both earned recognition of the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Baseball Weekly Honor Roll for their performances.
Neither Bramsway nor Price appeared in Tuesday’s 7-6 (8 innings) rain-shortened loss at Moravian University (20-15) (Apr. 26). Gwynedd Mercy University (17-20, 10-8) rallied from an early 6-2 deficit with three runs between the fifth (6-3) and sixth (6-5) innings; the tying run came home on a bases-loaded walk to senior catcher/second baseman Connor Boyd (Brookhaven, Pa.). Unfortunately, a well-executed bunt from sophomore right fielder Barry Walker (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) was wasted as Moravian University nullified the Griffins' game tying tally with their rain-off.
Gwynedd Mercy University and Cabrini University (24-8, 8-4) began their AEC series with Friday's nine-inning affair. The Cavaliers scored first with a run in the second inning, 1-0, and the Griffins answered with two runs in the top of the third as two-out walks to senior right fielder T.J. Brasier (Levittown, Pa.) and senior left fielder Brett Swire (Boyertown, Pa.) set the table for an error at third, 1-1, and a run-scoring single from Price; 2-1. Unfortunately, Cabrini University evened the score in the bottom of the second inning, 2-2, and grabbed a one-run lead with a fourth-inning squeeze; 3-2. A Price lead-off double turned into the tying run in the top of the eighth inning, but a 10-run bottom of the eighth propelled the home team to an eventual 13-4 final. Price was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs-batted-in (RBI).
Gwynedd Mercy University walked-off with the first game to Saturday’s AEC doubleheader versus Cabrini University on a successful squeeze bunt from senior second baseman Jake Martell (Yardley, Pa.); 4-3, but lost game two to the Cavaliers on an eighth-inning single to left field; 7-6. After Bramsway recorded his fifth scoreless out, a lead-off single through the left side from senior catcher Nate Campbell (Royersford, Pa.), a wild pitch, a balk, a walk to senior center fielder Jack Jamison (Fort Washington, Pa.), set the table for Martell's successful squeeze. Bramsway earned the win (4-1) with 1.2 innings of untouched relief.
In game two, the Cavaliers owned a 1-0 advantage before back-to-back sacrifice flies from Brasier and Swire gave the Griffins a 2-1 lead at the end of three innings. Cabrini University got the lead back with two runs in the top of the fifth, 3-2, but a sixth-inning grand slam from Price – the first home run of his collegiate career - gave the Griffins a 6-3 lead heading to the later frames. There, the Cavaliers evened the score with a three-run seventh, 6-6, and scored the eventual winning run with a two-out single to left in the eighth inning; 7-6.
Gwynedd Mercy University finishes their AEC schedule with a 10-8 record and concludes their regular season schedule next Saturday, May 6, when they host New York University (NYU) for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
