Owens Honored as AEC Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Lancaster, Pa. – (3/21/2022) – Gwynedd Mercy University junior goalkeeper Reilly Owens (Pottstown, Pa.) totaled 23 saves, nine ground balls, and four caused turnovers in the Griffins’ 1-1 week versus Rutgers University – Camden (W, 21-7 on Mar. 16) and Hood College (L, 9-18 on Mar. 19). Her impressive play earned her the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week award.
Senior midfielder Meleah Hoats (Conyngham, Pa.) put Gwynedd Mercy University (6-3) on the right path versus Rutgers University - Camden (2-3) with the first three goals (14:09, 13:44, 12:57) of the affair. The Raptors interrupted the Griffins' opening run with a goal at 11:05 (3-1), but the tally was just that - an interruption - as Gwynedd Mercy University owned a 14-3 (0:45) halftime lead and recorded an eventual 21-7 (1:09) victory. Owens earned the win (6-2) with six saves, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers in the first three quarters (45:00).
Gwynedd Mercy University welcomed Hood College (3-3) to the GMercyU Athletic Complex for Saturday (Mar. 19) afternoon's Hidden Opponent Awareness Game. The Blazers controlled the contest from the opening draw as they owned a 6-0 (0:01) first-quarter lead and a 12-2 (7:07) halftime advantage before a last-second score from sophomore attack Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) concluded the affair on an 18-9 (0:00) final. Owens took the loss (6-3) despite 12 saves, six ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their non-conference schedule on Wednesday, March 23, when they visit Arcadia University for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
