Eide Earns Recognition on AEC Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll

Lancaster, Pa. – (2/28/2022) – Sophomore attack Jason Eide (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) totaled 11 points (7 goals, 4 assists), six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers during the Griffins' 1-1 week versus Albright College (L, 11-16 on Feb. 23) and Juniata College (W, 16-8 on Feb. 26) to garner a spot on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll. Eide recorded five points (3 goals, 2 assists) and two ground balls in a 16-11 loss to the Lions before offering six points (4 goals, 2 assists), four ground balls, and two caused turnovers to a 16-8 win over the Eagles.

Gwynedd Mercy University (1-1) welcomed Albright College (1-2) to the GMercyU Athletic Complex for Wednesday (Fe. 23) night's season opener. The Lions scored the first two goals of the contest, 2-0 (8:23), but the Griffins matched the tallies with a pair of goals (7:43, 1:41) from Eide. The second came on the man-up and off the feed of senior attack Cameron Ostroff (Wilmington, Del.). Unfortunately, the difference in the eventual 16-11 final came in the second quarter where Albright College separated for an 8-2 (0:38) halftime lead. Gwynedd Mercy University trimmed the deficit to five goals, 10-5 (5:55), on an unassisted Ostroff goal just past the six-minute mark, but the Lions answered the Griffins' 3-0 run with the last goal of the third quarter, 11-5 (3:55), and the first of the fourth quarter, 12-5 (12:47). Gwynedd Mercy University pressured the Lions with another three-goal run, 12-8 (9:12). This one included man-up goals from sophomore midfielder Tyler Long (Downingtown, Pa.) (12:16) and freshman midfielder Richie Hughes (Turnersville, N.J.) (9:12) on either end of another Eide goal (10:36), but was followed by a trade of three-goal runs that kept the difference at four goals, 15-11 (3:53) with a little less than four minutes to play. There, Albright College managed to refocus their efforts and endure the Griffins in a 16-11 (2:08) final.

On Saturday (Feb. 26), Gwynedd Mercy University earned Head Coach Blase Cesarone '17 his first career win in dominant fashion as they doubled up Juniata College in a 16-8 final. The Eagles scored the first goal of the game, 1-0 (13:52), but the Griffins quickly turned the tables with a pair of Eide tallies (13:33, 11:47) and connection between freshman midfielder Ian Kish (Easton, Pa.) and sophomore midfielder Evan Yanuzzi (Easton, Pa.); 3-1 (9:42). Juniata College got one back with a man-up goal at 5:39, 3-2, but Ostroff made sure the Eagle rally was short-lived as he found Long for a goal at 4:09 (4-2) and Yanuzzi for a goal at 2:14; 5-2. Sophomore midfielder Justin Carney (Flemington, N.J.) made the difference 6-2 when he finished a feed from sophomore midfielder Jack Freeland (Riverton, N.J.) with 1:49 to play in the first frame.

The Eagles managed to cut the deficit to three goals by the end of the first quarter, 6-3 (0:43), but that is as close as they would get to Gwynedd Mercy University as the spread remained at three goals for halftime, 8-5 (7:31), before advancing to the eight-goal final.

Gwynedd Mercy University plays next on March 5, when they visit Montclair State University for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
