Two-Way Play, Milestone Ground Ball Returns Avellino to AEC Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll
Lancaster, Pa. – (3/17/2025) – Gwynedd Mercy University senior midfielder
Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) recorded her 100
th career ground ball in a tight contest versus Bryn Athyn College (L, 15-20 on Mar. 12) and was a major contributor to the Red and Gold efforts against Kings College (Pa.) (L, 10-22 on Mar. 10) and Lebanon Valley College (L, 3-25 on Mar. 15). As a result, Avellino earned a second straight
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll mention.
Marymount University swept this week’s major awards as senior midfielder Ella Baker (Hanover, Pa.) and senior goalkeeper Hannah Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) were respectively named the AEC Women’s Lacrosse Player and Defensive Player of the Week. Avellino and Papa were joined on the AEC Weekly Honor Roll by Marywood University junior midfielder Avery Meighan (Floral Park, N.Y.), as well as Neumann University graduate goalkeeper Abbie Fenton (Marmora, N.J.) and sophomore attack Alena Catka (Brookhaven, Pa.).
Gwynedd Mercy University (1-7) was neck-and-neck with King’s College early as sophomore midfielder
Rebecca Gordon (Sicklerville, N.J.) scored four of her six goals in an 11-4 Monarch run to halftime. After the break, the deficit only grew as the King’s College edge reached as many as 14 goals, 22-8 (4:40, 4QTR), before Gordon (22-9, 1:57) and Avellino (22-10, 0:02) deposited late Red and Gold tallies; 22-10. Avellino finished the affair with three points (1 goal, 2 assists), four shots, a ground ball, a caused turnover, and six draw controls.
Avellino accounted for half of the Gwynedd Mercy University milestones achieved during their contest against Bryn Athyn College as she recovered the 100
th ground ball of her collegiate career with 13:35 remaining in the third quarter. Earlier in the affair, fellow senior
Hailey Bloom (Margate City, N.J.) recorded the 100
th point of her collegiate career with an assist on a tally from freshman attack
Elena Colliluori (Gilbertsville, Pa.) at 12:03 in the first quarter. Unfortunately, the historical accomplishments of Bloom and Avellino were not enough to overcome the Lions in a 20-15 final. The Red and Gold captain matched her career-high with a season-high six scores. She also recorded two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls in the contest.
A busy week of non-conference competition ended on Saturday with a 25-3 loss at Lebanon Valley College. The Flying Dutchmen opened with a 4-0 run and used a 10-1 first quarter dominance to fuel their victory. Avellino figured into the Gwynedd Mercy University effort with a third-quarter goal (17-3, 9:59) and a draw control.
Gwynedd Mercy returns to action on Wednesday, March 19, when they host Eastern University for a 4:00 p.m. Morgan's Message game.
