Reed Named AEC Field Hockey Player of the Week, Filchner Returns to Honor Roll
Lancaster, Pa. – (10/21/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University landed a pair of Griffins on the
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Field Hockey Weekly Honor Roll following this Saturday’s (Oct. 19) 5-0 league win over Neumann University as both junior midfielder
Mackenzie Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior defender
Laura Filchner (Bath, Pa.) garnered recognition. The duo headlined the Red and Gold’ offensive outburst versus the Knights; the former offered a seven-point performance (3 goals, 1 assist) with her second career hat trick, while the latter scored twice (32:57, 37:20) during a three-goal third quarter.
Marywood University swept this week’s major awards as graduate forward Maria Tomada (Ingenerio Maschwitz, Argentina) and senior defender Aliyah Heintzelman (Nescopeck, Pa.) were respectively named the league’s Player and Defensive Player of the Week awards. Reed and Filchner were joined on the Weekly Honor Roll by Immaculata University sophomore forward Kailey Mayoros (Burlington, N.J.) and senior goalkeeper Julia Levase (Claymont, Del.).
Rested and eager to open their AEC season, Gwynedd Mercy University (3-11, 1-0) celebrated their senior class on Saturday, October 19 with an impressive 5-0 triumph over Neumann University (4-10, 0-2). Reed followed an opening goal from Filchner (1-0, 21:16) with a tally at the end of the 33rd minute (2-0, 32:57) and assisted Filchner on her second score in the 38th minute (3-0, 37:20), before caging two more shots (42:54, 59:19) in the second half. Gwynedd Mercy University controlled the contest and out shot Neumann University by a 16-4 margin despite an equal amount of penalty corners; 7-7. Reed took seven of the Griffins' 16 shots. Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) recorded two, and four others attempted one apiece.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Wednesday, October 23, when they visit Immaculata University for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
