Morris and Gablein Merit Mention on AEC Women’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll
Lancaster, Pa. – (9/23/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University junior forward Natalie Morris (Boyertown, Pa.) and junior goalkeeper Natalie Gablein (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned mention on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll for their play during the Griffins’ 1-2 week versus the University of Valley Forge (W, 6-0 on Sept. 16), Penn State Abington (L, 1-2 on Sept. 18), and Wilson College (L, 0-3 on Sept. 21). Morris recorded a goal (1-0, 1:45) and an assist (3-0, 67:37) in the Red and Gold’s 6-0 win over the Patriots, before recording the only Griffin goal (1-0, 20:05) of a 2-1 loss to the Nittany Lions. Meanwhile, Gablein recorded seven saves and fended off several corner kick opportunities to keep Gwynedd Mercy University in the game.
Marywood University senior forward Riley Mulherin (Clarks Summit, Pa.) was recognized as the AEC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, while her teammate, freshman midfielder Rylee Alston (Endwell, N.Y.) garnered the AEC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Morris and Gablein were joined on the Weekly Honor Roll by Immaculata University senior midfielder Rachel McNamee (Honey Brook, Pa.) and junior goalkeeper Emily Guthier (Sewell, N.J.), as well as Marymount University senior goalkeeper Hannah Mockenhaupt (Fairfax, Va.).
Gwynedd Mercy University (3-3-2) wasted no time gaining the upper hand on the University of Valley Forge (2-3) as a beautiful tic-tac-toe connection between freshman defenseman Paige Fienman (Philadelphia, Pa.), sophomore forward Demmi Fox (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.), and Morris gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead just 1:45 into the affair. The Griffins went on to win the contest by a commanding 6-0 measure. Morris totaled eight shots and also recorded an assist on Fox’s tally (3-0, 67:37).
Gwynedd Mercy University looked to make it two wins in a row when they welcomed Penn State Abington (3-3) to the Athletic Complex on Wednesday. Morris got the party started in the 21st-minute (1-0, 20:05), but the Griffins needed every diving save and pass deflection Gablein could muster in a one-goal loss to the Nittany Lions.
On Saturday, Gwynedd Mercy University traveled to Wilson College (6-0-2) for their final contest of the week. The undefeated Phoenix scored in the ninth (1-0, 8:50), 15th (2-0, 14:13), and 59th (3-0, 58:49) minutes, using a 15-6 shot advantage and a 6-3 corner kick edge to defeat the Griffins by a 3-0 final. Morris record one of the Red and Gold’s six shots.
Gwynedd Mercy University opens their AEC schedule on Saturday, September 28, when they visit Immaculata University for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
