Ronn Named AEC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, Cannon Scores Honor Roll
Lancaster, Pa. – (9/17/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University junior goalkeeper
Madisson Ronn (Warrington, Pa.) made a dozen (12) saves and earned her first win (1-0) of the season in Gwynedd Mercy University’s victory over Rosemont College (W, 2-1 on Sept. 11) to garner the
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week title. She was joined on the league report by sophomore midfielder
Bridget Cannon (Bensalem, Pa.), who earned Weekly Honor Roll mention with her first two goals of the season.
Pratt Institute of Technology junior midfielder Kat Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif.) was recognized as the AEC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. Additional Weekly Honor Roll recognition was Neumann University sophomore forward Ebony Arvelo (Camden, N.J.) and junior goalkeeper Lex Navarro (Valley Stream, N.Y.), as well as Immaculata University freshman midfielder Jocelyn Shuster (Springfield, Pa.) and junior goalkeeper Emily Guthier (Sewell, N.J.).
On Wednesday (Sept. 11) evening, Gwynedd Mercy University (2-1-2) hosted Rosemont College (1-3) in a tightly plated contest. After a quick first goal by Rosemont College (1-0, 4:57), the Griffins gritted out a game-tying goal on a connection between senior forward
Bethany Beinlich (Forksville, Pa.) and junior forward
Natalie Morris (Boyertown, Pa.); 1-1-1 (19:41). A defensive battled ensued and eventually led to a penalty kick opportunity for Cannon. She converted the free play, scoring the game-winning goal at 85:56 (2-1). Ronn was brilliant in goal, totaling 12 saves in the victory.
On Friday night (Sept. 13), the Griffins suffered their first loss of the season in a 2-1 final at Bryn Athyn College. Gwynedd Mercy struggled mightily in the first half to keep the ball in the offensive zone, as the Red and Gold only totaled two shots in the first 45 minutes of play. But, with a little over 15 minutes to play, the Griffins were fouled inside the box leading to a penalty kick. Cannon took the kick and scored the game-tying goal (1-1, 73:57). Unfortunately, the Lions did not go away quietly and won the contest with a tally in the 82
nd-minute (2-1, 81:22).
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action Wednesday, September 18, when they host Penn State Abington for a 6:00 p.m.
Mental Health Awareness Night.
