Devine Repeats as AEC Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Lancaster, Pa. – (4/23/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University junior
Jared Devine (Pottstown, Pa.) defended his
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week title this week. The Griffin goalkeeper totaled 35 saves, four ground balls, and a caused turnover in league wins over Marywood University (W, 11-5 on Apr. 17) and Neumann University (W, 12-6 on Apr. 20) to retain the title.
The AEC Player of the Week award went to Cabrini University sophomore attack Connor Herraiz (Succasunna, N.J.), while AEC Weekly Honor Roll recognition was given to Immaculata University graduate attack David Azzarano (Wayne, Pa.), Neumann University junior midfielder Jake Methlie (Springfield, Pa.), as well as Marymount University sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Brooks (Centreville, Pa.) and senior attack Jack Williams (Ashburn, Va.).
Gwynedd Mercy University (7-7, 4-1) scored the first three goals of the affair and left Marywood University (3-10, 1-3) behind in an eventual 11-5 AEC final on Wednesday (Apr. 17) night. After holding a 3-1 edge at the first-quarter break, the Griffins used a 3-0 second quarter spread to lead 6-1 at intermission. The second half was more competitive with Pacers halving the Red and Gold goals in the third quarter (4-2) and doubling them in the final frame (1-2), but it was not enough to catch the Griffins as sophomore attack
Josh Devine (Pottstown, Pa.) starred with a season-high seven goals, grabbed two ground balls, and caused a turnover. His older brother, Jared earned the win (6-7) with 16 saves, a ground ball, and a caused turnover.
Gwynedd Mercy University recognized seven seniors prior to Saturday (Apr. 20) afternoon's AEC contest with Neumann University (8-7, 2-3). The Griffins stepped up their play in the second half, distancing from a 6-5 halftime lead with a 6-1 run to today's 12-6 final. The Red and Gold were led by junior midfielder
Ian Kish (Easton, Pa.) (3 goals, 2 assists) and sophomore attack
Gunnar Seaman (Worcester, Pa.) (4 goals), who combined for nine points and another outstanding performance from Devine (Pottstown, Pa.). The Red and Gold keeper totaled 19 saves and three ground balls in the win (7-7).
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Wednesday, April 24, when they visit Centenary University (N.J.) for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
