Stewart Selected to AEC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll After Milestone
Lancaster, Pa. – (1/22/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University junior guard
Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored his 1,000
th career point with his final basket of an 81-77 league loss to Marymount University (Jan. 17) and led the Griffins with 17 points in a 74-58 league win over Immaculata University (Jan. 20) to earn recognition on the
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll. Stewart only scored seven points against the Saints, but also impacted the game with two assists and a steal. He added four assists and three steals to his team-high scoring versus the Mighty Macs.
Neumann University senior forward Jalen Vaughns (Tobyhanna, Pa.) was named the AEC Men’s Basketball Player the Week, while the AEC Defensive Player of the Week honor went to his teammate, freshman guard Jarell Keel (Philadelphia, Pa.). Stewart was joined on the AEC Weekly Honor Roll by Immaculata University graduate forward Tyler Tillery (Baltimore, Md.), Marymount University senior guard Montell Cooper (Glenn Dale, Md.), Marywood University junior guard Brendan Franko (Wantage, N.J.), and Cabrini University senior guard Eric Neal (Wilmington, Del.).
An early Gwynedd Mercy University (10-8, 3-2) lead melted quickly as Marymount University (10-6, 4-0) led most of the way in a 39-35 first half spread and eventually claimed tonight's AEC prize by an 81-77 final. Senior guards
JoHaan Vinson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Aziz Parker (Westampton, N.J.) headlined the Griffin effort, but Stewart added a silver lining to the loss with the 1,000th point on his collegiate career coming just before the two-minute mark of the second half; 73-70 (2:01).
Gwynedd Mercy University trailed Immaculata University (8-10, 1-4) in the early-going of Saturday's AEC contest by as many as six points, 11-5 (15:06), but the Griffins took the lead on a tough layup from freshman guard
Mazen Sayed (Chichester, Pa.) (18-16, 9:35), led 33-21 (0:58) at halftime, and played the second half with the game never truly in jeopardy for a 74-58 league victory over the Mighty Macs. Stewart led three Griffins in double figures with 17 points, while junior forward
Mike Marable (Philadelphia, Pa.) gave Immaculata University problems all night long with eight points, a team-high 11 rebounds, four assists, a block, and two steals.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Wednesday, January 23, when they host Marywood University for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
