Goals in Win over PSU Berks Earn Yildirim AEC Weekly Honor Roll Appearance
Lancaster, Pa. – (10/9/2023) – Gwynedd Mercy University senior forward
Mert Yildirim (Levittown, Pa.) earned a spot on the
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll for his two tallies in the Griffins’ 3-2 win at Penn State Berks (Oct. 7). He was joined on the AEC Weekly Honor Roll by Neumann University graduate goalkeeper Seth Walker (Delmar, Del.), while graduate forward Josh Fonder (Pottstown, Pa.) and graduate defenseman Jake Scully (Stratford, N.J.) were respectively named the AEC Player and Defensive Player of the Week.
Gwynedd Mercy University (2-5-4) battled non-conference opponent Penn State Berks (2-6-2) in Saturday afternoon’s contest. The Griffins trailed 2-1 with just a little over eight minutes to play, but two late Yildirim scores (72:49, 77:41) pushed the decision in the Red and Gold’s favor; 3-2. Sophomore midfielder
C.J. Clyde (Southampton, Pa.) located Yildirim for a successful header at 72:49 (2-2). A little less than five minutes later (3-2; 77:41) he added the game-winner as freshman midfielder/defenseman
Matt Edwards (Bensalem, Pa.) found Yildirim in the box for a blast to the far corner of the Nittany Lion net.
Gwynedd Mercy University also played Delaware Valley University and league rival, Cabrini University earlier in the week. The Griffins tied the Aggies (Oct. 2) in a scoreless stalemate and lost to the Cavaliers (Oct. 4) in a close 2-1 league final. Yildirim appeared in both contests, but did not record any statistics. His goals versus the Nittany Lions were his first two scores of the season. He has recorded three points (2 goals, 1 assist) and 10 shots so far this year.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Monday, October 9, when they briefly break from their AEC schedule to visit FDU-Florham for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
