Filchner Goals Garner Griffin Captain Spot on AEC Field Hockey Weekly Honor Roll
Lancaster, Pa. – (10/2/2023) – Junior midfielder
Laura Filchner (Bath, Pa.) scored both Gwynedd Mercy University goals in a busy 1-2 week to earn a mention on the
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Field Hockey Weekly Honor Roll. The Griffin captain provided the game-winning goal in a 1-0 triumph over Cedar Crest College (Sept. 25) and scored the lone Red and Gold tally of a 4-1 loss to Delaware Valley University (Sept. 30). In between, Filchner took two shots in a 2-0 loss to Arcadia University (Sept. 27) to finish the week with six shots and four points (2 goals).
Filchner was joined on the AEC Field Hockey Weekly Honor Roll by Manhattanville College freshman forward Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y.) and Marywood University sophomore midfielder Dariane Jones (Factoryville, Pa.). The AEC Player of the Week title went to Cabrini University senior midfielder Caroline Gallagher (Cape May Court House, N.J.), while the AEC Defensive Player of the Week honor went to Manhattanville College junior goalkeeper Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia).
Gwynedd Mercy University (1-8) laid their demons to rest with Monday evening's contest against Cedar Crest College (1-7) as Filchner’s early tally (7:36) and some late stalwart defense earned the Griffins and first-year Head Coach Alexa Ostoich their first wins of the season; 1-0. Filchner scored on the first Gwynedd Mercy University shot of the contest with her solid strike ricocheting off a Falcon defender to the back of the cage at 7:36. In goal, freshman
Nikki Williams (Cinnaminson, N.J.) recorded two saves in the shutout victory (1-5).
The Griffin defense held Arcadia University (4-5) at bay until the late in the second quarter of Wednesday evening’s contest as the Knights used a pair of connections between junior midfielder Morgan McEntire (Bath, Pa.) and junior midfielder Morganne Dee (Buffalo, N.Y.) (25:00, 37:34) to defeat the Griffins by a 2-0 final. The Griffins totaled four shots, while a defensive save from sophomore defender
Abby LePage (Cinnaminson, N.J.) (7:05), and four stops from Williams accounted for their five saves. Filchner totaled two shots in the affair.
The Red and Gold ended their recent three-game homestand with Friday's noon affair against Delaware Valley University (3-5). The Aggies scored on an early penalty corner (1-0, 7:48), but the contest was tied at halftime thanks to a great individual effort from Filchner. The Griffin captain made a brilliant cut from the left flank to center pitch before burying second goal (1-1, 18:26) of the season in the Delaware Valley University cage. Unfortunately, the Aggies capitalized on three fourth-quarter scoring opportunities (47:58, 52:27, 59:51) to seize a 4-1 win.
This week stats account for all of Filchner’s numbers this season. She is currently tied with senior forward
Olivia Headley (Langhorne, Pa.) and sophomore forward
Makenzie Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.) for the team lead in points with four; each has recorded two goals this season.
Gwynedd Mercy University opens their AEC season on Wednesday, October 4, when they visit Manhattanville College for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
