Eggers and Sharkey Secure Awards on AEC Women’s Basketball Weekly Report

Lancaster, Pa. – (11/22/2021) – Sophomore guard Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.) broke out for 25 points in the second half of the Griffins’ 77-71 Messiah University Tip-Off Tournament Consolation Game victory over Saint Vincent College to cap off an Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week performance. She was joined on the league report by junior forward Cayla Sharkey (Lansdale, Pa.), who garnered an Honor Roll mention for her impressive defensive effort. Eggers averaged 19.3 points per game (PPG) while grabbing a dozen (12) rebounds, handing out a pair of assists, and making nine steals. Meanwhile, Sharkey supported with 7.7 PPG, 8.0 rebounds per game, three assists, seven blocks, and five steals.

A 25-4 fourth-quarter spread was the determining factor in Tuesday (Nov. 16) night's Battle of 309 as Gwynedd Mercy University (3-3) beared down and reversed their fortunes in an eventual 79-64 victory over Arcadia University (0-3). The Griffins' frontcourt combination juniors, Haley Crossley (Warminster, Pa.) and Sharkey headlined the reprisal; the former offered 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a block, and two steals, while the latter provided an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double on top of an assist, two blocks, and three steals. Eggers offered a dozen points, a pair of rebounds, two assists, and three steals in the win.

Gwynedd Mercy University began their stay at the Messiah University Tip-Off Tournament with a 100-63 loss to DeSales University. The Bulldogs controlled the contest from the opening tip, as they outscored the Griffins 24-7 in the first quarter and 25-15 in the second en route to a 49-22 halftime lead. In the second half, the Griffins cut the deficit to 24 points, 51-27, on three-point basket Sharkey with 9:08 remaining in the third quarter. But that is as close as Gwynedd Mercy University would get to DeSales University as a 44-27 rebound discrepancy ensured the Bulldogs victory. Sophomore guard Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.) led the Gwynedd Mercy University with 15 points, three rebounds, and a pair of steals. Sharkey finished with nine points, seven rebounds, an assist, and four blocks.

With nine field goals (9-of-21, .429) and nine free throws (9-of-11, .818), Eggers scored 31 points in the Griffins' 77-71 Messiah University Tip-Off Tournament Consolation victory over Saint Vincent College (1-3). Eggers took over in the second half, scoring 25 of her 31 points in the latter half; she was 7-of-11 (.636) from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 (1.000) from the line. She added seven rebounds and four steals to her impressive offensive production, while Sharkey totaled three points, seven rebounds, an assist, a block, and two steals.

Gwynedd Mercy University competes once more before the Thanksgiving holiday as they visit Misericordia University for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off on Monday, November 22.
