Scally and Haggerty Earn AEC Softball Weekly Honor Roll Recognition
Lancaster, Pa. - (4/3/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University juniors, third baseman
Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) and first baseman/pitcher
Ashley Haggerty (East Norriton, Pa.) were named to the
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Softball Weekly Honor Roll for their contributions to the Griffins’ 1-3 week of league play versus Centenary University (L, 6-2 and L, 8-5 on Mar. 29) and Neumann University (L, 3-2 and W, 8-6 on Mar. 31). Scally did damage in the second game of both doubleheaders as she was 2-for-4 with a run, two doubles, and two runs-batted-in (RBI) against the Cyclones, then 2-for-3 with a run, a double, her first collegiate home run, and three RBI against the Knights. Haggerty played 5.1 innings at first base before earning her second win of the season with the final five outs from the circle; 1.2 inning pitched, one hit, one strikeout.
Gwynedd Mercy University 11-7, 1-3) scored the first run of Wednesday’s AEC doubleheader with Centenary University (NJ) (9-9, 3-1) on a third-inning single from junior second basemanÂ
Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.), but a six-run fifth inning was enough to carry the Cyclones to an eventual 6-2 win. In game two, the Griffins took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a double from Scally, a botched fielder's choice off the bat of junior pitcherÂ
Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.), and a pair of singles to right field from junior designated playerÂ
Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) and sophomore right fielderÂ
Carly Maw (Bensalem, Pa.). Unfortunately, the Cyclones regained the lead with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning, 7-4, and completed their sweep with an 8-5 victory over the Griffins.
Scally blasted a three-run shot to left field in the third inning of game two; her first career home run gave Gwynedd Mercy University a 5-3 advantage. Eventually, the Griffins would have to regain their edge over Neumann University (6-15, 1-1) in Friday’s AEC twin bill with another run scoring on a Scally double in the fifth inning and Focht singling in a pair of runs in the sixth that afforded Gwynedd Mercy University a 8-6 victory. In the opener, the Knights grabbed a 3-0 lead before a two-run single from junior first basemanÂ
Allison Ross (Philadelphia, Pa.) made it a one-run final; 3-2.
Gwynedd Mercy University briefly breaks from AEC play today, Monday, April 3, to host the University of Valley Forge for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
