Crossley Named AEC Women’s Basketball Player of The Week, Sharkey Scores Honor Roll Recognition

Lancaster, Pa. – (12/12/2022) – Gwynedd Mercy University senior forward Haley Crossley (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 23 points in each contest and recorded a pair of double-doubles en route to her first Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week title of the season. Meanwhile, senior forward Cayla Sharkey (Lansdale, Pa.) protected the paint with a couple steals, 10 blocks, and 25 rebounds to earn a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.

Gwynedd Mercy University’s 2-1 week included bookend wins over Salisbury University (W, 80-79 (OT) on Dec. 5) and John Jay College (W, 84-62 on Dec. 10). Versus the Sea Gulls, the hard work of Crossley and Sharkey laid the ground work for a buzzer-beating layup from junior guard Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.). The former was 8-of-18 (.444) from the floor and 7-of-9 (.778) from the free throw line, while grabbing a dozen (12) rebounds, dishing out five assists, and making four steals. The latter was a force on defense as she paired her dozen (12) rebounds with six blocks and a pair of steals. She also recorded seven points and three assists.

In between the wins, Gwynedd Mercy University suffered a 72-59 loss at Albright College (Dec. 7). Crossley again netted 23 points, this time on a 10-of-23 (.435) shooting effort that included a pair of three-pointers (2-of-10, .200). She also hit a free throw (1-of-2, .500), while totaling seven rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal. Sharkey offered three points, five rebounds, an assist, and a steal to the effort.

The week ended with an 84-62 victory at John Jay College. Crossley’s third straight 23-point performance was achieved on a 9-of-14 (.643) shooting performance and a 5-of-6 (.833) free throw effort that came with a season-high 15 rebounds, five assists, a block, and two steals. Sharkey hit three (3-of-6, .500) from long range and paired her nine points with eight rebounds, four assists, four blocks, and a steal.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Saturday, December 17, when they host Rowan University for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
