2023 PhillySIDA Men's Soccer Academic All-Area: John Wagner
Philadelphia, Pa. – (12/12/2023) – Gwynedd Mercy University graduate goalkeeper John Wagner (Phoenixville, Pa.) repeated as one of the 12 student-athletes named to the 2023 Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (PhillySIDA) Men's Soccer Academic All-Area Team (.PDF). For the second year in a row, the Griffin captain finished with an Atlantic East Conference (AEC)-high 71 saves and earned himself All-AEC Second Team honors while helping the Red and Gold to a 4-8-6 overall record and a 2-3-1 lead standing that earned them the #6 seed in the 2023 AEC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. Drexel University junior midfielder Youri Senden (Voerendall, Netherlands) earned the 2023 Philly-SIDA Men's Soccer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year title.

Selected by the sport information directors from 30 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, Senden and Wagner were joined on the all-academic roster by Immaculata University junior midfielder Michael Balestriere (West Deptford, N.J.), University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) junior defenseman Leo Burney (Seattle, Wash.) and senior goalkeeper Nick Christoffersen (Toronto, Ontario), West Chester University junior midfielder Jack Dieffenderfer (Lewisburg, Pa.) and senior goalkeeper Daniel Good (Exton, Pa.), Haverford College senior goalkeeper Dylan Ioffreda (Hershey, Pa.) and senior defenseman Max Mouer (Houston, Texas), Widener University graduate defenseman Angelo Pelosi (North Haledon, N.J.), Penn State University Brandywine senior midfielder Kyle Reuter (York, Pa.), and Rowan University sophomore forward Johnny Troiano (Hazlet, N.J.).

Wager earned All-AEC Second Team honors with his best season in the Red and Gold. He compiled a 4-5-4 record (1,125:00 minutes) with 71 saves on a .807 save percentage and a 1.36 goals-against average (GAA) and collected an AEC Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 17) award with 10 saves in a 1-0-1 week that included a shutout of Immaculata University (W, 1-0 on Oct. 14). His .807 save percentage led the AEC and ranks third all-time for a single season.

In the classroom, Wagner is a four-time member of the AEC All-Academic Team (2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2021-2022, 2022-2023) and a four-time member of the Gwynedd Mercy University Athletics Academic Elite (Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022, Spring 2023).
