Gaston Returns to AEC Women’s Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll with Play Versus Highlanders and Falcons
Lancaster, Pa. – (9/12/2022) – Freshman setter Ayanna Gaston (Middletown, Del.) repeated on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll thanks to her impressive play during Gwynedd Mercy University’s recent 1-1 week versus Cairn University (L, 1-3; 13-25, 15-25, 25-11, 13-25 on Sept. 6) and Cedar Crest College (W, 3-1; 25-21, 18-25, 25-22, 25-15 on Sept. 8). Gaston totaled seven kills, two aces, and nine digs in a loss to the Highlanders, but helped lead the Griffins to victory over the Falcons with 31 assists, seven aces, and eight digs.
Gwynedd Mercy University (2-3) looked to rally from a 2-0 deficit with a definitive 25-11 win in the third set at Cairn University (3-0). Unfortunately, the Highlanders rebounded from the defeat with a 25-13 fourth-frame win that precipitated the eventual 3-1 conclusion. Junior middle hitter Ashley Brown (Lansdale, Pa.) led the Griffins with 10.5 points on nine kills, a solo block, and a block assist.
Two days later, Gwynedd Mercy University trailed Cedar Crest College (0-1) most of the way in the third set. But, this time it closed on Gaston’s serve as the Griffins scored the last five points of the frame with a pair of Falcon errors, two Brown kills, and a finishing ace; 25-22. The win spurred Gwynedd Mercy University for a walkaway 25-15 win in the fourth set of a 3-1 final. Brown totaled 13 kills, but junior outside hitter Bria Purnell (Reading, Pa.) was the star of the victory with 20.5 points as she matched her career-high with 19 kills, scored an ace, and assisted on a block.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their schedule on Tuesday, September 13, when they visit Penn State Berks for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
