Assists At Cedar Crest College Garner Thornton AEC Weekly Honor Roll Mention
Lancaster, Pa. – (9/6/2022) – Gwynedd Mercy University graduate forward Caitlyn Thornton (Ivyland, Pa.) found sophomore forward Amber Sims (Perkasie, Pa.) toward the end of the first quarter (1-0, 14:11) and then sophomore forward Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor, N.J.) in the final minute (2-1, 59:02) to secure Gwynedd Mercy University a dramatic 2-1 victory at Cedar Crest College on Saturday, September 3. The performance earned Thornton a spot on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Field Hockey Weekly Honor Roll.
Earlier in the week, Gwynedd Mercy University (1-1) opened their 2022 schedule with a 2-0 loss at Misericordia University (Sept. 1). The Cougars grabbed an early lead with a goal just 1:28 after the opening whistle and added an insurance tally at 25:37 to separate themselves from the Griffins in a 2-0 final. Misericordia University controlled a majority of the possession with a 14-0 shot advantage and an 11-0 edge in penalty corners.
On Saturday, Gwynedd Mercy University controlled play early in the affair, but Cedar Crest College (0-1) kept the contest competitive despite the Griffins' 20-2 shot margin and 10-1 edge in penalty corners. Thornton finished the contest with three shots and her two assists.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Wednesday, September 7, when they visit Delaware Valley University for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
