Sixth-Seeded Gwynedd Mercy University Draws #3 Marymount University in AEC Quarterfinals

2023 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament
Lancaster, Pa. – (4/27/2023) – With the conclusion of yesterday's regular and conference season contests, league commissioner Jessica Huntley has officially released the seeding for the upcoming 2023 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. A perfect 6-0 conference record awards Cabrini University the top seed, while Marywood University's 5-1 league standing sets them and the second seed; both teams receive a bye in the quarterfinal round which will feature Saturday (Apr. 29) matchups between #4 Neumann University (3-3) and #5 Immaculata University (2-4), and #3 Marymount University (4-2) and #6 Gwynedd Mercy University (1-5).

Gwynedd Mercy University (5-11, 1-5) visited Marymount University (11-6, 4-2) on April 5 and departed Long Bridge Park as the losing party in a 22-3 final. Despite the Saints' best effort to shut her down, junior attack Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) was the lone scorer for the Griffins. She found the back of the net three times (8:14 1QTR, 12:24 2QTR, 13:04 4QTR), unassisted. Both her and sophomore midfielder Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.) recovered a draw control, while sophomore defender Maddie Jeter (Bensalem, Pa.) caused a turnover. Senior goalkeeper Reilly Owens (Pottstown, Pa.) headlined the backfield with a dozen (12) saves and ten of the Griffins' sixteen ground balls.

Varilla reached her career 100-point and 100-goal milestones en route to a team-high 70 points (55 goals, 15 assists); she ranks fourth in the league for both goals and points. Junior midfielder Caroline Cleary (Chalfont, Pa.) recorded a team-high 32 draw controls in just 11 games, while Owens led the Griffins in both ground balls (64) and caused turnovers (29). She also led the league in the former category. In goal, Owens (5-11) totaled a league-leading 168 saves on 12.64 goals-against average (GAA) and a .467 save percentage.
