true SCRANTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was eliminated from the 2021 Atlantic East Men's Lacrosse Tournament in an 11-6 defeat at Marywood on Saturday in a quarterfinal matchup.
The fifth-seeded Griffins were looking to knock off the fourth-seeded Pacers, whom they posted a 9-7 victory here at home back on April 17th.
For the game, GMercyU got three goals from
Jason Eide, while
Nick Flamma,
Evan Yanuzzi, and
Jack Freeland also scored. The Pacers Zach Vaughan led all scoring with four goals and teammate Patrick DIngwell finished with four points (two goals/two assists).
Gwynedd, who fought back from a 5-1 deficit in the second quarter to tie things up at the half, was limited to 17 shots in the third and fourth quarters with just one goal.
Flamma started that charge with his unassisted tally at the 11:15 mark of the second. Back-to-back scores from Freeland and Eide that were 20 seconds apart got the team within one. Yanuzzi would get a goal with 5:06 before the break to knot the game up at 5-5.
Goalie
Chase McFeeley recorded seven of his 10 saves in the second half. His counterpart, Marywood's Connor Reed registered 12 stops.
Kohler Setley added two assists while leading the squad with six groundballs.
Philip Weis had three of the team's seven caused turnovers as well.
The loss marks the end for the team's six seniors: Setley, Weis,
Lucas Gray,
Nick Heiler,
Cross Zavada, and
Ryan Boyd. They have appeared in the conference championship game on two occasions and have accumulated 31 wins during their time as a Griffin.
