GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy will face Cabrini on Saturday in the inaugural Atlantic East Men's Lacrosse Championship Game. No stranger to each other in the postseason, the teams will meet for the fifth time in a title game, dating back when both schools were members of the CSAC.
The second-seeded Griffins (10-5) took down #3 Marymount, 10-8, on Wednesday in a semifinal matchup to advance while the top-seeded Cavaliers dispatched #4 Neumann, 25-4, to earn their spot.
Cabrini (16-2) won the regular season matchup here in Gwynedd Valley back on March 30th in their conference openers.
The Griffins were CSAC Championship Finalists in 2010, 2012, 2016, and 2018 in just 11 seasons as a varsity program.
Offensively, Gwynedd will lean on its top two scorers in senior
Ryan Simpson (41g/3a) and rookie
Jacob Dzierzgowski (31g/19a). Simpson leads the Atlantic East with 12 man-up goals, a program single-season record. Senior
Jordan Dzierzgowski (17g) and
Joseph Pandolfi (14g), along with
Nick Freda (12g) are also threats. Junior
Kohler Setley (18g/18a) was injured in the semifinal game and his status for the championship is unknown.
On the defensive side, GMercyU will have its hands full with the conference's top offense and among the leaders in Division III.
Shawn Ryan,
Philip Weis, and
Anthony Pozsonyi have combined for 63 groundballs and 37 caused turnovers. Freshman goalie
Aubron Swartley has a 9.14 GAA and averages over eight saves a contest.
The #6 ranked (USILA) Cavaliers, who have appeared in 19-straight conference championship games as members of the CSAC/PAC, feature seven players with 20 or more goals this season, led by Jordan Krug (50g/23a). Bill Morgan (38g/10a) is second and also has 11 man-up goals. Cabrini's defense is ranked third in the country, yielding just over six goals a contest. Goalie Riley White owns a .569 save percentage as well as a 6.18 GAA.
