BRUNSWICK, ME. -- In one of the most successful seasons in school history, the Gwynedd Mercy Women's Tennis Team had their 2016 season come to a close after a 5-0 defeat to host Bowdoin in the second round of the NCAA Division III Team Tournament Friday morning.

The Griffins finish the season with a final mark of 18-2, one shy of a school-record 19 set by the 2009 team, but with the highest win percentage ever (.900). The squad this year also made history by winning their first ever NCAA Tournament match on Thursday in a 5-3 win over Farmingdale State.

The sixth-ranked Polar Bears (13-6), out of the New England Small College Athletic Conference, would lose just one game in taking all three doubles matches. After an injury forced the #1 singles to retire, Bowdoin used a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 to secure the fifth team point and the match.

The loss also marks the end of the careers of the team's two seniors, Jenna Caffarello and Taylor Michener, who each had over 80 wins in both singles and doubles and a bevy of all-conference awards in their four seasons as a Griffin.
