PITTSBURGH, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Men's Tennis Team fell, 5-0, to the hands of Johns Hopkins in the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Team Tournament on Thursday.
The Griffins (11-4) and Blue Jays started their first-round match at the host campus of Carnegie Mellon, but no sooner than 15 minutes into the start of doubles play, Mother Nature altered those plans. The match was halted and moved to the off-campus indoor court facility in nearby Monroeville.
Johns Hopkins (17-5), out of the Centennial Conference, took all three doubles matches, to race out to a 3-0 lead. Straight-set wins at #1 and #2 singles helped the Blue Jays secure the fifth and deciding team win to end the match.
The loss also marked the end of the careers of the team's seniors:
Mike Bruce,
Peter Brzezinski,
Joshua Carson,
Alexander Channick,
Blaine Grisak, and
Brandon Rodriguez. All six players were a part of the program's first ever conference champions in 2015 and again this past season.
