Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – (6/2/2022) – Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Player of the Week honors for graduate Justin Collins (Springfield, Pa.) (Apr. 6) and freshman Gustavo Bilbao (Madrid, Spain) (Mar. 29) highlighted a winless (0-11, 0-5 AEC) season for the Gwynedd Mercy University men's tennis team. The Griffins battled Cairn University (L, 0-9 on Sept. 25/L, 2-5 on Mar. 21), Albright College (L, 1-8 on Oct. 2), Penn State Abington (L, 0-9 on Mar. 25), and Penn State Brandywine (L, 0-9 on Mar. 26/L, 2-7 on Mar. 30) in non-conference play before challenging their AEC rivals during April's league schedule.
 
Gwynedd Mercy University opened their 2021-2022 campaign with fall dates at Cairn University (Sept. 25) and at Albright College (Oct. 2). The Griffins netted only a single point between the two matches as sophomore Ian Gordynskiy (Quakertown, Pa.) scored a number two singles point with his 6-4, 6-4, victory over Lion freshman Kobe Serpa (Reading, Pa.).
 
Inclement weather ended the fall season early and delayed the start of spring competition with cancelations to scheduled matches versus Penn State Brandywine (Oct. 9) and Eastern University (Mar. 19). Better forecasts permitted Gwynedd Mercy University to commence their spring schedule with March dates with the Highlanders (Mar. 21) and Nittany Lions of Abington (Mar. 25) and Brandywine (Mar. 26, Mar. 30).
 
Gwynedd Mercy University welcomed Cairn University (4-5) to campus for their first spring match of the season. Collins and Bilbao respectively scored the Griffins' points at number three (6-3, 6-4) and number four (7-6 (5), 6-4) singles. Unfortunately, they were not enough to overcome the Highlanders in a 5-2 final. Bilbao – who marked his first collegiate victory with his number three singles win - also joined junior Christian Rice (Quakertown, Pa.) for an 8-1 loss at number one doubles; the effort earned him his March-29 AEC Weekly Honor Roll recognition.
 
A week later (Apr. 6), Collins became the second straight Griffin to claim the AEC Player of the Week title. The elder statesman scored a 6-3, 6-2, win at number three singles in Gwynedd Mercy University's 7-2 loss to Penn State Brandywine (2-3) to garner the award. He also combined with Gordynskiy to force a tiebreaker at number two doubles (8-7 (7-2)).

April brought new life with the start of AEC play. Unfortunately, Gwynedd Mercy University was unable to defeat any of its league opponents with consecutive losses coming in meetings with Marymount University (L, 0-9 on Apr. 9), Cabrini University (L, 1-8 on Apr. 11), Immaculata University (L, 2-7 on Apr. 12), Marywood University (L, 2-7 on Apr. 20), and Neumann University (L, 1-8 on Apr. 22).
 
Sporting a 3-4 mark at number four singles and a 2-0 standing at number five singles, Bilbao's 5-5 overall singles record was the best on the Gwynedd Mercy University season statistics. The freshman was 3-1 in AEC play, posting consecutive points versus Cavaliers (W, 6-2, 6-1 @ #5), Mighty Macs (W, 7-5, 6-2 @ #4), and Knights (W, 6-0, retired @ #4). Collins finished his final season with a 3-4 number three singles record that included a 6-0, 6-3, point versus his Immaculata University counterpart. Gordynskiy (1-10; 0-6 @ #1, 1-4 @ #2), senior Hugh Lynch (Philadelphia, Pa.) (1-0 @ #5), and senior Brian O'Driscoll (Newtown, Pa.) (1-5; 0-1 @ #3, 1-2 @ #4, 0-2 @ #5) recorded the other Griffin points as individuals as the Gwynedd Mercy University failed to record a doubles victory during the course of the season.
