PHILADELPHIA -- Gwynedd Mercy captured the CSAC Men's Tennis Championship for the second year in a row, defeating Marywood, 5-1, on Saturday.
The Griffins (10-3) claim the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Team Tournament which takes place next month. The match features a best-of-nine format with the team who wins five matches is declared the winner.
The three doubles matches kicked things off with GMercyU winning easily at #3 as the team of
Alexander Channick and
Brandon Rodriguez posted an 8-1 win. At #2, the duo of
Kylil Curry and
Brian Irwin battled to take their first lead of the match at 5-4, only to win the next three points to close it out at 8-4. At #1
Peter Brzezinski and
Joshua Carson also rallied to take a 5-4 lead, but ultimately fell, 8-6.
Up 2-1 heading into singles, Irwin made quick work at #6 with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Carson followed soon after as he claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #3 singles. With a 4-1 lead and needing one more win to end the match,
Blaine Grisak was able to wrap up the title with his 6-0, 6-2 win at #5.
Pairings for the NCAA Tournament will be made on Monday, May 9th with first-round action beginning on Friday, May 13th.
