PHILADELPHIA --Gwynedd Mercy outlasted Marywood, 5-4, Saturday night to capture the 2016 Colonial States Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Team Championship, its fourth-straight.
The Griffins (14-0) now earn the CSAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Team Tournament which takes place in May of 2017.
This is the fifth year in a row the two teams have met for the title, and it was a nail biter to say the least.
With the format in a best-of-nine, the three doubles matches were first up. The team of
Amanda Goff and
Katie Garthaus danced to an 8-2 win at #1 to pick up the first point. The #2 team of
Natalie Danze and
Kristen Kriebel and the #3 team of Nicole Piccolo and
Jenna Trythall found themselves in 7-4 deficits and facing match points. But both would battle back to tie their respective matches at 7-7. It was then that the Pacers were able to grind out 9-7 victories in both to go up 2-1 entering singles play.
Garthaus made quick work at #1 singles in a 6-0, 6-1 win but soon after Marywood's Nicole Sinclair notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory at #6 singles to make it 3-2.
Goff would fight through to a 6-3, 6-0 decision to change the team to knot things up at 3-3. Danze would finally finish off a win at #2 singles with her 6-0, 6-1 win to give the Griffins their first lead of the night.
With
Robyn Belen leading one set in #5 singles, the Pacers' Kristen Lambert picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at #4, turning the focus onto court five. Belen led 5-1 in the second set, Marywood's Melanie Kobela would battle back to force a 5-5 tie. After Belen's serve to go up 6-5, she would close out the title after Kobela's return on match point was out.
