BOX SCORE

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was able to nail down the #1 playoff seed and finish undefeated in conference play as the Griffins knocked off defending champion Neumann, 6-3, Tuesday afternoon.

With the weather in question, the Knights came blazing in to town with an undefeated record as well, with the top seed in the CSAC Team Tournament at stake.  The undefeated Griffins were major underdogs, considering the amount of matches they have played back to back over the last five days.

Gwynedd stormed out of the cage, winning all three doubles matches to take a commanding a 3-0 lead.  Despite a phenomenal start, Coach Jim Holt and John Magee were still not satisfied....both very experienced coaches with a ton of championships under their belt...they knew not to get complacent.

In singles, the trio of juniors Josh Carson (Plantation, Fl./West Broward) and Peter Brzezinski (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) along with freshman Kylil Curry (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) came up bigger than the Statue of Liberty, notching clutch victories to push Gwynedd over to the top.

"The key wins put us as the top seed, which we did not expect," said Coach Holt, "Being shorthanded against the league champs…I am not going to lie…I thought we had a real uphill battle".

"In doubles they all came up big, taking a 3-0 lead into singles. I have the utmost respect for the league champs and their coach, and for us to come away with a win today is a real nice surprise. In my 13 years, this is the most wide-open race to the finish as I can recall. The playoff teams are all competitive and anyone could beat anyone on a given day."

The Griffins (9-1, 7-0 CSAC), winners of nine straight, will now face fourth-seeded Cabrini on Friday in a semifinal matchup of the 2015 CSAC Team Tournament which takes place at Legacy Tennis Courts in Philadelphia starting at 9:30 a.m. Neumann and Marywood will square off in the other semifinal immediately following. Friday's winners will advance to the championship on Saturday, which gets started at 3:30 p.m.
