SOUTH HADLEY, MA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was defeated by Mount Holyoke in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III National Field Hockey Tournament, 5-2, on Wednesday evening.
The Griffins found themselves with early momentum, almost scoring the first goal of the game when
Katie Hickson (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) played a ball past the keeper that sat on the goal line before it was cleared by the Lyons. Both teams played an even first half until Mount Holyoke took a 1-0 advantage when Julia Bell scored the game's first goal right before the halftime break.
The Lyons kept momentum rolling to start the second half taking a commanding 3-0 lead on goals by Diana Banmann and Charlotte Wagner. The Griffins would not quit, scoring the game's next two goals in a two minute span. The first came from sophomore
Katie O'Neill (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) when she scored on an assist from senior
Maria Karidas (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South). Karidas played a perfect ball through the crease that found O'Neill's stick when she was standing on the far post and she put her shot in the back of the cage. The second came when Karidas deflected a pass from senior
Brianne Kline (York, Pa./Central York) to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 15:18 left in the game.
However Mount Holyoke put the contest away scoring just under two minutes later when Wagner scored her second goal of the game and later Kirsten Kilburn connected on a penalty stroke.
Junior goalie
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) made eight saves on fifteen shots. Her counterpart Liz DiCesare stopped recorded seven saves on twelve shots faced.
Gwynedd ends the 2013 campaign with a 12-9 mark. Mount Holyoke will travel to Montclair State on Saturday in second-round action.
It also marked the final game for the team's five seniors: Karidas, Kline,
Erin Magee (Lindenwold, N.J./Paul VI),
Sarah Jackson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) and
Morgan Grothmann (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East). The five captured three-straight CSAC Championships, appeared in three-straight NCAA Tournaments, played in four-straight CSAC Title games, all while going 56-28 overall and 26-3 in conference play.
