SCRANTON, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy fell 79-64 to the University of Scranton in the consolation game of the PNC Bank Royal Rumble hosted by the Royals.
Gwynedd was paced by four players in double figures.
Larry Jones III (Woodbine, N.J. / Holy Spirit) led the team with 12 points. The trio of
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J. / Oakcrest),
Brian Hennessey (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge) and
Tyler Barnes (New Egypt, N.J. / New Egypt) each added ten points.
The Griffins would jump out early to an 11-10 lead when Jones III knocked down a three ball with just over twelve minutes remaining in the first half. The Royals would overtake the lead from the Griffins and stretch their lead to six points three times in the half. A Ross Danzig jumper at the end of the stanza would give Scranton a 38-32 lead at the break.
Gwynedd would cut the lead to one in the second half when senior
Brendan Stanton (Harleysville, Pa. / Lansdale Catholic) would connect from downtown to trail 40-39 with 16:33 remaining in the game. The Royals would pull away from that point furthering themselves from the Griffins taking a double-digit lead with under nine minutes remaining and stretching the lead to fifteen 70-55 with 4:06 left with a Tommy Morgan lay-up.
The Griffins shot 32.8% (19-of-58) for the game while Scranton was 51.9% (27-of-52). Brendan Boken led all scorers with 21 points for the Royals. Michael Barr scored 17 off the bench with Morgan and Danzig adding 16 and 10 respectively.
Gwynedd outrebounded Scranton, 36-32. Barnes led the way for the Griffins grabbing thirteen caroms. Danzig and Jason Pierce grabbed eight apiece of the Royals.
Alvernia 83 defeated St. Joseph's (L.I.) 54 in the Championship game. Barnes and Boken were named to the All-Tournament along with Keith Anderson of St. Joseph's. Kahlil Bennett and Terrance Bridgers represented Alvernia with Bridgers being named Tournament MVP.
The Griffins return back to action on Thursday January 3rd hosting Elizabethtown for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
