Stewart and Marable Merit AEC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

Lancaster, Pa. – (12/9/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University senior guards, Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Mike Marable (Philadelphia, Pa.) were recognized on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll for their play in the Griffins’ recent 2-0 week at Alvernia University (W, 91-90 (OT) on Dec. 4) and Penn State Abington (W, 101-62 on Dec. 6). Stewart has been a consistent scorer this season and he continued to pace the Griffins in the category this week with 16 points in an overtime win over the Golden Wolves and a dozen (12) points in the decisive victory over the Nittany Lions. Meanwhile, Marable did the dirty work for the Red and Gold as he recorded seven blocks and four steals while averaging 10.0 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds.

Immaculata University swept this week’s major awards as sophomore guard Mandon Seapoe (Upper Darby, Pa.) and senior guard John Flood (Philadelphia, Pa.) were respectively named the AEC Men’s Basketball Player and Defensive Player of the Week. Stewart and Marable were joined on the AEC Weekly Honor Roll by Marywood University junior guard Collin Himmelberg (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Neumann University junior guard Bryan Etienne (Coral Springs, Fla.), Centenary University (N.J.) sophomore guard Darnelle Forrest (Ewing, N.J.), as well as Marymount University fifth-year guard Marcus Stubbs (Boyds, Md.) and junior guard Isaac Harris (Cherryville, Pa.).

Gwynedd Mercy University (7-0) kept their undefeated streak intact with this Wednesday evening's 91-90 overtime triumph at Alvernia University (4-2). The Griffins trailed the Golden Wolves by 11 points at halftime, 51-40 (0:04), but erased the deficit early in the second half, 60-60 (13:50), and sent the contest to the extra frame with a successful free throw from junior guard D.J. Johnson (Norristown, Pa.); 81-81 (0:05). In the overtime period, another Johnson free throw gave the Red and Gold a late lead, 88-87 (1:53), before a last-second drive from graduate guard Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J.) delivered the finishing blow of a 91-90 (0:07) victory. Five Griffins finished in double figures, including Summers (19 points) and Johnson (11). So did Stewart and Marable; the former finished with 16 points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals, while the latter had his finger prints all over the win with a dozen (12) points, seven rebounds, two assists, four blocks, and four steals.

Off to polar-opposite starts, Gwynedd Mercy University had little trouble disposing of Penn State Abington (0-9) by 40 points, 101-61 (0:22), in this evening's contest. The Red and the Gold had an outstanding shooting night with a .529 (36-of-68) field goal percentage, a .438 (14-of-32) three-point percentage, and a .938 (15-of-16) free throw percentage; the last serves as a season's best thus far. Stewart was one of five Griffins in double figures and he complimented his scoring with five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Meanwhile, Marable was a factor without reaching double digits with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three blocks.

Gwynedd Mercy University resumes their schedule on Monday, December 9, when they host Cairn University for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
