Triple –Double Scores Sharkey AEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Award
Lancaster, Pa. – (12/20/2021) – Gwynedd Mercy University junior forward Cayla Sharkey (Lansdale, Pa.) headlined the Griffins’ recent 89-76 victory over Wilkes University with first triple-double – 21 points, 15 rebounds, 10 blocks – in program history. The historical performance earned her the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor the league’s most recent report.
The Gwynedd Mercy University (6-5) lead over Wilkes University (4-7) first reached double digits late in the first quarter; 20-10 (0:55). The spread settled at seven points, 20-13 (0:19) for the first-quarter break, but Sharkey made her impression on the affair, keeping the Griffins comfortably ahead for a 40-31 (0:21) halftime advantage, a 65-49 (0:27) third-quarter favor, and the eventual 89-76 final.
Sharkey's hallmark afternoon included five three-point (5-of-13, .385) baskets in an 8-of-17 (.471) field goal effort that also came with two assists and three steals. Her triple-double is the ninth at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) DIII level this season.
Gwynedd Mercy University competes next on Wednesday, December 29, with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against Drew University at Lycoming College's Hoops for Hounds Tournament.
