Varilla Makes Season’s Debut on AEC Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll
Lancaster, Pa. – (3/6/2023) – Gwynedd Mercy University junior attack
Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) earned her first
Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll recognition of the season for her 11 points (10 goals, 1 assist), six ground balls, five draw controls, and two caused turnovers in a 1-1 week versus Wilkes University (L, 8-10 on Mar. 1) and Delaware Valley University (W, 17-8 on Mar. 4). The Griffin captain scored five goals in each game, including the game-winner against the Aggies.

Varilla scored the first two goals (13:58, 12:52) of the game at Wilkes University (2-1) and Gwynedd Mercy University (3-2) held a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to a pair of scores (10:59, 4:04) from sophomore attack
Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.). Unfortunately, the Colonels used a 3-0 second quarter and the first two scores of the third quarter to separate for an 8-4 (11:41) lead. Varilla looked to rally the Griffins with three third-quarter goals (11:05, 5:55, 5:25), but the effort was not enough to catch Wilkes University in an eventual 10-8 final. Varilla added two ground balls and two draws to her five scores.
She out did herself three days later with five goals, an assist, four ground balls, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls in the 17-8 win over Delaware Valley University (1-2). Varilla scored her first goal (5:20) in the Griffins’ 5-0 run that closed the first quarter and the first goal of the second quarter (14:20), giving Gwynedd Mercy University a 6-3 advantage. Later that quarter, she deposited three more scores (3:27, 2:59, 0:12), extending the Griffins’ lead to 11-5 by halftime. Collins took over in the second half and led Gwynedd Mercy University to victory.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Thursday, March 9, when they host Bryn Mawr College for an 11:00 a.m. contest.
