Griffins Play Final Home Weekend Contest Of The 2026 Season Against Mighty Macs

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/18/2026) – Gwynedd Mercy University (9-22, 3-7 AEC) welcomed Neumann University (10-13, 4-6 AEC) to Frank O. Genuardi Legends Field for a Saturday Atlantic East Conference (AEC) doubleheader. In game one, the Griffins delivered an explosive offensive performance and mounted a dramatic late comeback effort in an 11–10 extra-inning thriller. In game two, they could not overcome the Mighty Macs' early offense and suffered a 12-3 defeat. Senior infielder Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) finished the afternoon going four-for-eight (.500) in both games combined, including a game-high five runs-batted-in (RBI) in game one.

Griffin Highlights:

Game One:

  • The Griffins wasted no time getting on the board, capitalizing on early pressure and defensive miscues to take a 2–0 lead in the first inning. Gwynedd Mercy continued to apply pressure offensively, with Smith driving in a run in the third to extend the advantage (3-1).
  • After Immaculata surged ahead, the Griffins responded with one of their biggest innings of the season in the fourth. Freshman outfielder Giavanna Kanaris (New Egypt, N.J.) delivered a clutch three-RBI triple, sparking a three-run frame that pushed Gwynedd Mercy back in front, 6–5.
  • Smith led the offensive charge with a standout performance, finishing 2-for-4 with five RBI, including a key RBI single and a momentum-shifting two-run triple in the seventh inning. Kanaris added three RBI, while sophomore utility player Hannah Cohen (North Wales, Pa.) chipped in with an RBI double as the Griffins continued to find timely hits throughout the lineup.
  • Trailing late, Gwynedd Mercy showed resilience once again in the seventh inning. The Griffins erupted for four runs, highlighted by Smith's triple and Cohen's extra-base hit, tying the game at 10–10 and forcing extra innings.
  • Freshman pitchers Rylie Fitzsimmons (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Rylie O'Toole (Southampton, Pa.) took the circle for the Red and Gold in game one. The former pitched 4.1 innings with six earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. The latter secured 3.2 innings with five hits, five runs, while striking out four in the loss (0-5).

Game Two:

  • After falling behind early, the Griffins continued to battle and found momentum in the middle innings. Gwynedd Mercy broke through in the third inning when freshman outfielder Nya Brown (Whitehall, Pa.) delivered a two-RBI single, bringing home freshman infielder Macey Harrold (West Deptford, N.J.) and junior catcher Maya Hellyer (Quakertown, Pa.) to cut into the deficit (8-2)
  • The Griffins added another run in the fourth, capitalizing on defensive miscues and consistent contact. Harrold once again played a key role, driving in a run (8-3) with one of her three hits on the day, as Gwynedd Mercy continued to apply pressure offensively.
  • Harrold led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Smith added two hits, and Hellyer contributed two hits of her own. Gwynedd Mercy's lineup showed depth, with multiple players reaching base and generating scoring opportunities throughout the game.
  • In the circle, the Griffins pieced together a solid relief effort, highlighted by junior pitcher Grace Carney's (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) scoreless inning to close out the game. Defensively, Gwynedd Mercy worked through early pressure and continued to compete inning-by-inning.

Gwynedd Mercy University has a quick turnaround as the team returns to action on Monday, April 20, when the Griffins travel to Penn State Berks for a scheduled 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
