Temperatures Drop, but Griffins Stay Hot in Run-Shortened Win over Hazleton Nittany Lions

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (3/1/2026) - The temperature plummeted by more than 20 degrees, but Gwynedd Mercy University (4-1) continued to hit the ball well at the start of the season as two runs in their first at-bat (2-0), another in their third (3-0), and nine runs in their fourth was enough end the game after the top of the seventh; 12-0 (7). Sophomore first baseman Brady Belfus (Deptford, N.J.) brought home the first Red and Gold run with his sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first and he finished the contest with three runs-batted-in (RBI) after he doubled to left for a pair of runs in the fourth inning (12-0). Junior shortstop Drew Haines (Hammonton, N.J.) (1-for-2; 2BB, 2R, 2RBI), freshman third baseman Felix Melendez (Philadelphia, Pa.) (2-for-4; 1R, 2RBI), and junior outfielder Karl Wissmann (Cinnaminson, N.J.) (2-for-4; 1R, 2RBI) also knocked in multiple runs in the affair. On the bump, freshman Landon Glovas (Nazareth, Pa.) enjoyed the offense while keeping the Nittany Lions uncomfortable at the plate. He earned the win (1-0) and allowed no hits in his collegiate debut as he walked three and struck out three while working around two outfield errors in a high-sky day at Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball Field.

Griffin Highlights
  • Junior center fielder Noah Waldron (Collingswood, N.J.) led off the game with a walk and quickly moved to third with a pair of passed balls. Three batters later, Belfus sacrificed him home for the first Gwynedd Mercy University run; 1-0. Immediately, afterwards Melendez doubled to right center to bring home senior designated hitter Jimmy DeCarlo (Ridley Park, Pa.), 2-0.
  • In the third inning, sophomore second baseman Deven Ross (Lansdale, Pa.) drew a one-out walk, Wissman singled through the right side, and freshman catcher Jacob Ruddell (Warrington, Pa.) before a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman right fielder Charlie Neal (Mickleton, N.J.) delivered the next Griffin run; 3-0.
  • The fourth inning turned into a merry-go-round after Belfus' sacrifice bunt as singles from Melendez (4-0), Wissman (6-0), Neal (7-0), Haines (9-0), DeCarlo (10-0), and Belfus (12-0) brought home the runs necessary to end the game early.
  • Ruddell scored a run and drew three walks, while serving as backstop for Glovas' perfect four.
  • Senior Zachary Freas (Mickleton, N.J.) (2.0 IP, 1H, 1BB) and freshman Giovanni Marinucci (Mullica Hill, N.J.) (1.0 IP, 1H, 1BB, 2K) held the Nittany Lions scoreless over the final three innings.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to Genuardi Legends Field on Tuesday, March 3, as they host Muhlenberg College for a 3:00 p.m. contest before flying South for the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
