Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (3/20/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (2-11) welcomed Haverford College (8-6) to Frank O. Genuardi Legends Softball Field for today's home-opening doubleheader. The Griffins found themselves in a 5-0 hole in the first inning and fell too far behind in the fifth inning as the Fords secured their first win early; 13-2. A second-inning solo blast from freshman catcher
Makayla Mihelcic (Souderton, Pa.) got the Red and Gold on the scoreboard first in game two; 1-0, but four Fords scored in the fifth inning, 4-1, and two more in the seventh inning for a 6-1 final. Senior outfielder
Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.) was 3-for-5 on the afternoon with a run and a run-batted-in (RBI) in a 2-for-2 opener. Mihelcic's homer was the first of her collegiate career and the first ever at the Genuardi Legends Softball Field.
Griffin Highlights
Game 1
- McDaid singled to right field with one out in the third; she moved to second on a passed ball and reached third on a grounder to second, but another one of those left her stranded.
- Gwynedd Mercy University broke up the shut out in their final at-bat. There, a double from senior pitcher Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.) and a triple from triple from McDaid did the deed; 13-1, before a one-out walk to sophomore second baseman Avery Schwartz (Collegeville, Pa.) and a single from junior shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) made it 13-2.
Game 2
- In the second, Mihelcic homered to center field with one out; 1-0.
- The Griffin also had a chance to score a run in the third inning. There, a one-out single down the left field line from fifth-year center fielder Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) almost turned into something after a two-out error, and a walk to Smith. Unfortunately, the second fielder's choice of the inning brought it to a close without damage.
- Fifth-year pitcher Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) gave Gwynedd Mercy University a chance; she allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out six in the loss (2-4).
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their mid-march schedule on Saturday, March 22, when they visit Penn State Berks for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
