Little River, S.C. - (3/12/2025) - With the start of the 2025 season, Gwynedd Mercy University (1-4) took its annual trip down to South Carolina to participate in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. With a 1-3 start at Little River, the Red and Gold took on Delaware Valley University (3-0) in game one and Mitchell College (3-1) in game two. In game one, a four-run outburst in the fourth inning for the Aggies was the difference maker in a 7-2 defeat. In game two, the Mariners scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the first, but the Griffins showed fight, bringing across three runs in the fourth but were unable to get over the hump dropping to Mitchell 4-3. 5th-year pitcher Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) started game one against Delaware Valley, going the distance (six innings) and allowing eight hits, five earned runs, four strikeouts, and three walks in the loss (1-1). In game two, senior pitcher Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.) got the nod and pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out four in the loss (0-2).

Griffin Highlights:

Game One:

  • In the second inning, freshman utility player Madison Heim (Orwigsburg, Pa.) knocked in her first career run-batted-in (RBI) with a single to right field, scoring senior catcher/infielder Shannon McLaughlin (Haddon Heights, N.J.) (1-1).
  • Baumeister hit her own RBI single to centerfield in the third inning tying the score at three apiece.

Game Two:

  • With four runs in the first inning for the Mariners, Gwynedd Mercy dug deep in the fourth inning to try and mount a comeback. A wild pitch started the Griffins' scoring, allowing junior Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) to cross the dish (4-1). 5th-year captain catcher Kaylee Colantano (Clinton, N.J.) drove in her first run of the 2025 season with an RBI single, bringing across sophomore utility player Hannah Cohen (North Whales, Pa.) (4-2). Freshman outfielder Chloe Heckman (Bethel, Pa.), with the baes loaded, worked a walk, bringing home the final run of game two (4-3).

Gwynedd Mercy University is back in action Thursday, March 13, when Gwynedd Mercy takes on Vermont State University Castleton at 1:00 p.m. and playing just two hours later against SUNY Morrisville for a scheduled 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
