Overtime Separates Griffins from Pacers in AEC Opener

Scranton, Pa. - (1/8/2025) - Overtime certainly served as the determining factor in tonight's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) season opener as Gwynedd Mercy University (11-0, 1-0) hit 7-of-9 (.778) from the field and 4-of-6 (.667) from the free throw line en route to an 87-78 victory over Marywood University (8-7, 0-2). The Griffins took the opening stanza by a 36-25 score as they held the Pacers to 9-of-21 (.429) effort from the floor. The second half was nearly the opposite as the home team recovered by a 43-32 frame that saw the Red and Gold only find success on 38.2% (13-of-34) of their field goal attempts. In the end, graduate guard Shawn Summers Jr. (Monclair, N.J.) led four Griffins in double figures with 20 points; senior guard Mike Marable (Philadelphia, Pa.) was one of the others as he paired his team-high 12 rebounds with 16 points.

Griffins Highlights
  • Defense continued to be the key for Gwynedd Mercy University as the Griffins held Marywood University to a 25.0% (5-of-20) performance from beyond the three-point line and forced the Pacers into 17 turnovers.
  • The Griffins' first-half separation came late in the period as the Red and Gold tied the score at 14-14 (10:51) before using a 22-11 run to obtain their 11-point halftime lead; 36-25 (0:20).
  • In the second half, Gwynedd Mercy University's lead remained in double digits until 17:47 (38-30). A Summers's layup at 15:34 reestablished an 11-point margin, 43-32, only for the Pacers to earn themselves an extra period.
  • There, three free throws from senior guard Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) (74-68, 4:05) and a Marable steal-and-assist to Summers (76-68, 3:49) sparked the Griffins for conference victory.
  • Summers added five rebounds and an assist to his fifth performance of 20 points or more, while Marable complimented his second double-double of the season with a team-high seven assists, two blocks, and three steals.
  • Stewart finished with 19 points. He was 4-of-7 (.571) from three-point range and offered two rebounds, six assists, and a block in excess of his scoring.
  • Sophomore forward Justin Savage (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the fourth Griffin in double figures with 10 points. He also recorded six rebounds, an assist, and two steals.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Saturday, January 11, when they host Immaculata University for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
