Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (2/23/2024) - With a new season means new beginnings. Gwynedd Mercy University (1-0) opened its 2024 season with a home contest for the first time since May 7th, 2022, as the Griffins unveiled Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball Field. Gwynedd Mercy took on Washington College (Md.) (0-1) and with a two-run fifth inning would allow the Griffins to celebrate a new chapter in Gwynedd Mercy Baseball with a 3-1 victory. Senior pitcher Frank Ebling (Cherry Hill, N.J.) started on the bump for the red and gold. Ebling finished with seven innings pitched allowing four hits, no walks, one earned run, and a career-high ten strikeouts.
Griffin Highlights:
- After a quiet first two innings, sophomore team captain Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) singled to right, followed by junior designated hitter Ricky Templeton (West Deptford, N.J.) walk. With runners on first and second and only one out, a passed ball allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Senior first baseman Nick Price (Levittown, Pa.) made the most of his opportunity with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home the Griffins' first run and the team's first run batted in on the year.
- Gwynedd Mercy took advantage of the Shoremen's defensive miscues in the bottom of the fifth. With an error from both the pitcher and the first baseman both Junker and Price reached home plate and gave the Griffins a 3-1 cushion.
- Multiple Griffins had their first hit of their collegiate career including freshman shortstop Drew Haines (Hammonton, N.J.) and freshman second baseman Daulton McDonald (Cinnaminson, N.J.).
- Senior pitcher Mitchell Bramsway (Temecula, Calif.) came in the eighth for a two-inning save. Bramsway saw seven batters in the two innings and was able to shut the door earning his first save of the season.
Gwynedd Mercy University will play their first doubleheader when they host Haverford College on Saturday, February 23 for an 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
