Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (11/23/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (4-0) held Penn State Brandywine (2-5) to just a dozen (12) first-half points in today's 92-47 matinee final at the Griffin Complex. The Red and Gold scored the first 16 points of the contest and proceeded to stake themselves a 30-point advantage, 42-12 (1:44) by suffocating the Nittany Lions to a 14.3% (4-of-28) shooting percentage and 14 turnovers. 1,000 Career Points - Shawn Summers Jr. - 11232024Gwynedd Mercy University bullied the PSU Brandywine with their 44-12 (0:39) first half lead; the deficit reached 40 points, 55-15, with 17:32 still to play and eclipsed 50 points, 76-25 (9:52), on a three point basket from graduate guard Dylan Harris (Bloomsburg, Pa.) just past the 10-minute mark. Harris was one of many Griffins to contribute to 42 bench points, but junior guard Devin Benson (Williamstown, N.J.) was the top producer with 11 points. Graduate guard Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J.) sparked the Red and Gold's impressive first half performance with all 20 of his points coming in the opening frame; he surpassed 1,000 career points with his second basket of the contest (8-0, 17:15 1ST) and teamed with senior guard Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) to front Gwynedd Mercy University's defensive efforts.

Griffin Highlights
  • Off the tip, Gwynedd Mercy University focused their play - offensively and defensively - through Summers. Following his milestone bucket, a three pointer at 16:43 made it 11-0 Griffins. Stewart added another long range basket moments later, 14-0 (16:07), and a long outlet to senior forward Dom Thomas (Mullica Hill, N.J.) completed the Red and Gold's 16-0 opening run.
  • The Griffins shot 51.5% (17-of-33) in the first half and had little trouble getting to the basket with 22 of their 34 first half points coming in the paint and 15 coming on the fastbreak.
  • In addition to his points, Summers provided five rebounds, two assists, a block, and two steals in just 18 minutes.
  • Stewart partnered his nine points with two rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.
  • Senior guard Mike Marable (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior guard Jalen Snead (Philadelphia, Pa.) were influential in Gwynedd Mercy University's success. The former finished with nine points, a team-high eight rebounds, and five assists, while the latter totaled five points, four rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
Gwynedd Mercy University plays their last contest before the Thanksgiving holiday on Tuesday, November 26, when they host Juniata College for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
