(7Lancaster, Pa. – (2/19/2023) – Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Commissioner Jessica Huntley, has officially released the seeding for the upcoming
2022-2023 AEC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. Gwynedd Mercy University's 14-point (82-68) victory over Cabrini University earned the Griffins the #2 seed and a Wednesday, February 22 (7:00 p.m.), home semifinal against a yet to be determined opponent. The Griffins' opponent will be determined by a the outcomes of the quarterfinal round on Monday, February 20; the highest advancing seed from the quarterfinal round will travel to Gwynedd Valley, while the lowest remaining seed will visit #1 Marymount University.
Behind the Saints and Griffins, the remainder of the AEC Championship field includes #3 Cabrini University, #4 Immaculata University, #5 Neumann University, and #6 Marywood University. In Monday's quarterfinal round, the defending league champion Mighty Macs will host the Knights at 6:00 p.m. and the Cavaliers will host the Pacers at 7:00 p.m.
Gwynedd Mercy University went 8-4 in conference play, a game better than they fared in 2021-2022 when they same starting five led the Griffins to an AEC Championship appearance opposite Immaculata University. The Griffins were 1-1 against the Mighty Macs (L, 49-74 on Jan. 4/W, 84-83 (OT) on Jan. 28) with each side winning the road game. Gwynedd Mercy University also split their AEC series with the Cavaliers (L, 75-86 on Jan. 21/W, 82-68 on Feb. 18) and lost both meetings with the Saints (L, 56-65 (OT) on Jan. 7/L, 59-64 on Feb. 1) while sweeping the Pacers (W, 74-56 on Jan. 11/W, 90-71 on Feb. 8), the Knights (W, 73-54 on Jan. 18/W, 70-67 on Feb. 11), and Centenary University (N.J.) (W, 80-50 on Jan. 25/W, 83-52 on Feb. 15).
In conference play, the Griffins were led by their senior captains - guard
Elise Sylvester (Pottstown, Pa.) and senior forward
Haley Crossley (Philadelphia, Pa.) - the former averaged a team-high 21.2 points per game (PPG) while grabbing 4.0 rebounds (RPG) and handing out 2.2 assists (APG), while the latter assumed a point-forward role and filled it nicely with 14.4 PPG, 10.8 RPG, and a team-high 4.0 APG. Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.) was a quality third with 12.8 PPG, 6.0 RPG, and 2.1 assists per game. The trio are part of a team defense that leads the AEC in turnover margin (7.17) and steals (138), while ranking second in rebounds (520, 43.3/game).
