Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – (9/21/2022) – Gwynedd Mercy University hosted the University of Scranton in this afternoon's contest. A stingy Royals defense held the Griffins to fourth-quarter shots from graduate forward Caitlyn Thornton (Ivyland, Pa.) (50:58) and defender Kaci Murray (Chalfont, Pa.) (51:09) and supported an early tally (1-0, 8:56) until an insurance score came midway through the fourth quarter (2-0, 55:37) of a 2-0 final.
 
The University of Scranton (5-0) kept the pressure on the Gwynedd Mercy University (2-4) until a loose ball in the defense was scored to the back of the cage just before the nine-minute mark; 1-0 (8:56). The Griffins had a few pushes through the first three quarters, but offered their best chances following a successful Royal penalty corner early in the fourth quarter; 2-0 (55:37). Thornton got the ball back and fired her shot after a penalty corner input at 50:41. Murray's offering came just 11 seconds later (51:09), but both were denied by the University of Scranton goalkeeper.
 
Senior Alexis Schambers (West Chester, Pa.), sophomore Laura Filchner (Bath, Pa.), and freshman Abby LePage (Cinnaminson, N.J.) helped Murray protect sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Lawless (Bristol, Pa.) from the Royal advances. Filchner made a defensive save on a third-quarter penalty corner (33:56) and Lawless totaled five saves in the loss (2-4).
 
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Athletic Complex on Saturday, September 24, when they host Bryn Athyn College for a 12:00 contest.
