Avellino Finds Sims, Schambers Preserves Griffin Victory with Last-Second Sellout

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – (9/14-2022) – With the lights shining down onto the field and just 13 seconds left to go in the game, Eastern University had a chance to tie things up with Gwynedd Mercy University. A Griffin needed to step up to stop the Eagles' last-second penalty corner and senior defensemen Alexis Schambers (West Chester, Pa.) did just that as the Griffin captain rushed out to meet the striking Eagle stick and denied any chance of stalemate. Sophomore forward Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor, N.J.) played a perfect pass to sophomore forward Amber Sims (Perkasie, Pa.) for a tap-in tally that served as the eventual Griffin game winner, 1-0 (34:34).

The intensity grew in the second quarter of this evening's affair, there Eastern University (1-4) slightly overshadowed Gwynedd Mercy University with a 4-2 shot advantage. The Griffins staked their claim in the third quarter, coming out of intermission with renewed energy that resulted in multiple Eagle fouls and an eventual green card. The extra player set the stage for the Avellino-Sims connection that found the back of the Eagle cage in the 35th minute; 1-0 (34:34). From there Schambers, graduate defender Kaci Murray (Chalfont, Pa.), and sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Lawless (Bristol, Pa.) headlined a stellar defensive effort that preserved the Griffin victory.

Sims, Murray, and graduate student forward Caitlyn Thornton (Ivyland, Pa.) recorded two shots apiece. Schambers and three others recorded the other four Griffin shots. Lawless was outstanding in the win (2-3), making the four saves she needed to for the shutout and standing tall when an Eagle sent a second-quarter (19:54) penalty stroke wide of the cage.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Athletic Complex on Saturday, September 17, when they host William Paterson University for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
