Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – (6/3/2022) – Gwynedd Mercy University's 2022 season came to a climax with an April-27 league win over Marymount University (W, 12-7 on Apr. 27) and a 14-9 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Quarterfinal win over #3 Marywood University (Apr. 30). After a season-opening loss to Albright College (1-2) (L, 11-16 on Feb. 23), Gwynedd Mercy University their first win of a 5-12 (2-4 AEC) season with a 16-8 victory over Juniata College (0-4) (Feb. 26). The Eagles scored the first goal of the game, 1-0 (13:52), but the Griffins quickly turned the tables with a pair of Eide tallies (13:33, 11:47) and a connection between freshman midfielder
Ian Kish (Easton, Pa.) and sophomore midfielder
Evan Yanuzzi (Easton, Pa.); 3-1 (9:42). The win was the first Coach Cesarone, while Eide garnered a spot on the AEC Weekly Honor Roll (Feb. 28) with 11 points (7 goals, 4 assists), six ground balls, and two caused turnovers between the two contests.
Keeping the Griffins on even footing, a 23-3 loss at Montclair State University (1-2) (Mar. 5) was followed by a 15-5 triumph at Bryn Athyn College (0-1) (Mar. 16). Gwynedd Mercy University made a strong opening statement with a 6-0 first quarter and added to their advantage with a 3-1 second quarter; the 9-1 (2:10) halftime lead was more than enough distance for the Griffins to claim victory the Lions. The week ended with an 18-7 loss at Moravian University (3-1) (Mar. 19) before subsequent losses to Messiah College (4-4) (L, 9-13 on Mar. 23), Arcadia University (4-3) (L, 7-14 on Mar. 26), Susquehanna University (5-5) (L, 5-14 on Mar. 30), and Southwestern University (9-3) (L, 4-15 on Apr. 1) left the Griffins at 2-7 heading to conference play. Gwynedd Mercy University opened their league schedule with an impressive 24-2 victory at Centenary University (Apr. 6). The Griffins scored the first 19 goals of the contest and enjoyed impressive performances from Long (4 goals, 3 assists), senior attack

Unfortunately, a second AEC win did not come until the April-27 triumph over Marymount University (8-8). The Griffins set the tone early, separating for a 3-1 first-quarter edge with unassisted scores from Eide (2-1, 9:16) and Lockhart (3-1, 1:04). They doubled-down in the second quarter, scoring twice for each of the Saints' first two goals, 7-3 (5:13), and matching them goal-for-goal to an 8-4 halftime spread. A 4-3 second-half margin kept Gwynedd Mercy University ahead for the remainder of an eventual 12-7 victory. Lockhart took a team-high 16 shots to score his career-high five goals. He also recorded four ground balls and caused two turnovers en route to an AEC Weekly Honor Roll (May 2) appearance. Swartley was named the AEC Defensive Player of the Week, earning his fourth win of the season with dozen (12) saves, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
In addition to his team-highs, Edie finished second on the team in goals (24), recovered 33 ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Lockhart finished his first season at Gwynedd Mercy University with 35 points (28 goals, 7 assists), 42 ground balls, and 12 caused turnovers. Long (33 points; 20 goals, 13 assists) and Ostroff (22 points; 14 goals, 5 assists) also enjoyed 20-plus points seasons. Swartley (5-11) became the program's all-time save leader (400 saves) and single-season saves leader (247) with a 13.33 goals-against average (GAA) and a .553 save percentage.
