CSAC Women's Basketball Championship Game Preview

Griffins meet familiar foe in the final

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- With eight wins in a row, Gwynedd Mercy looks to make it nine when they host Cabrini at The Griffin Complex on Saturday, February 25th in the 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship.

The Griffins (17-10) will be aiming for their seventh conference title as the team makes its 16th appearance in the finals. Gwynedd and Cabrini have met before in the finals, marking the sixth meeting between the two programs. GM is 1-4 all-time with their last meeting in 2012-13, with GMercyU winning the title over the Cavaliers in 2006-07. The team has captured titles in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, and 2012.

Gwynedd Mercy, who entered the postseason as the #3 seed, cruised past #6 Immaculata in first-round action Monday night, 68-33. It was on Wednesday, when the team turned in its best shooting performance of the season, in knocking off second-seeded Neumann, 88-69.

Fifth-seeded Cabrini (16-11) is trying to notch their third road playoff win in a row, as the four-time defending champions return to the finals once again. On Monday, the Cavaliers used a last-second bucket to win at #4 Centenary, 48-46. That win sent them to the top-seed, Marywood, in which they prevailed in Wednesday's other semifinal, 67-63, to set up another road game, this time at Gwynedd.

The teams split the regular-season series with each winning on the other's floor. Cabrini snuck out of The Griffin Complex with a 75-71 overtime win back on January 9th. The Griffins returned the favor in the regular season finale, winning 61-49 last Saturday.

Seniors Charlotte Kucowski and Nicole Dombrowski give the Griffins a solid 1-2 punch both scoring and on the boards. The duo was also selected all-conference with Kucowski on the first team and Dombrowski on the second. Kucowski is ranked in the top 10 in the CSAC in scoring (16.2 ppg), rebounding (9.3), blocks (46), steals (64), field goal percentage (45%) and three-pointers made (59). Dombrowski also averages in double figures in scoring (10.ppg) while pulling down seven boards a game and added 40 blocks and 53 steals. Bianca Adams is tops in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.1) and is second in assists (110). Julianna Hoisington (24 3FGM) and Larissa Leyes (26 3FGM) are a threat from behind the arc while Monet McGorda has started 26 of 27 games for GM.

For Cabrini, rookie Erin Dodds leads the team in scoring (12.9 ppg) and was named a first-team all-league. Renee Oliver averages over eight points and nine rebounds while teammates Myonie Williamson and Nomi Washington also average in double figures (11.1 ppg). Oliver was a second-team pick while Williamson garnered a spot on the honorable mention list.
