BOX SCOREROSEMONT, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy scored goals in bunches to go on a defeat Rosemont, 16-9, and notched a school record Wednesday night.
A total of seven different Griffins scored, led by
Tony McCraw (Lawnton, Pa./Central Dauphin East) as the junior totaled five goals and an assist. Seniors
Nico Belardo (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) and
Dillon Cave (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) each poured in three goals apiece. The three goals were a career high for Cave.
McCraw with his six points on the night, set a new program single-season points record, as he now sits with 57, surpassing the old mark of 56 set in 2013 by Bill Beck.
Tied 1-1 after the first quarter, the Ravens took an early lead in the second with a tally by Justin Regan. Gwynedd (9-4, 3-2 CSAC) would fire off 19 shots in the stanza, and would score the next five goals to take a 6-2 lead at the half. GMercyU would outshoot Rosemont, 30-9, in the first half.
Another early Raven goal was answered with a pair of unassisted scores from Belardo in the third. Belardo would hook up with junior
Blase Cesarone (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) as part of a three-goal spurt to up the lead to 11-4.
The Griffins would seemingly put the game out of reach with five goals in a row from McCraw,
Jacob Snavely (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South), Cave, Cesarone, and
Nick Guglielmi (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) for their largest lead of the contest at 16-5 with 6:50 to go in the game.
Rosemont would add three goals late in the contest to account for the final score.
Cesarone would finish with two goals while Guglielmi added an assist. Junior
Tommy Belmont (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) also found the back of the net.
In total, the Griffins held a 50-31 shooting edge while totaling 10 caused turnovers and were good on 19-of-21 clears.
Senior goalie
John Black (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) made 10 saves in net. Kiefer Paul recorded 18 stops for Rosemont (3-9, 2-3 CSAC).
On Saturday, the Griffins welcome Keystone on Senior Day starting at noon. Prior to the game, the team will recognize the senior class. With a win, Gwynedd Mercy can clinch a playoff berth in the CSAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament
